French at Beckfoot Thornton

We want to ensure that students can communicate and interact with the world around them.

Through teaching a variety of key grammatical structures and developing a wide-ranging vocabulary, we equip our students with the knowledge to express their ideas through writing and speaking and comprehend materials from a range of sources.

We want to create confident communicators who can speak wit increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity. We want our students to develop a curiosity about the world around them, so that students leave with the foundations for further study of languages or to work or travel abroad.

Enrichment

During your study of French at Beckfoot Thornton, there will be a range of opportunities available to enrich your subject knowledge outside of the classroom, including:

  • Languages Ambassadors representing MFL at school events.
  • Explore Languages visit to the University of Leeds, including a project about different languages.
  • Languages Day at Beckfoot Allerton Primary School – Spelling Bee competition with other Trust schools

Assessment

Internal assessments will take place throughout each year to monitor pupil progress and further inform teaching and learning.

Careers

The study of French prepares students for the opportunity to choose A Level and to go on to study a Modern Foreign Language in Further Education. Students will develop transferable skills to work abroad or to work for companies in the UK with links to Europe. It is ideal preparation for employment in the following fields: Leisure, Tourism, Travel, Journalism, Teaching, Engineering and many others.

Introducing yourself: learn how to introduce yourself to others in French, including greetings, talking about where your age, birthday, where you live, your personality and your appearance

Family and friends: describe who is in your family and their personality and appearance

School: Give opinions on your school subjects and describe your school

Hobbies: explain which hobbies you do and why, and talk about what you are going to do next weekend

Sports: describe which sports you like to do and play, and talk about the sport you’re doing next weekend

Year 8

Family relationships: Revisit describing your family, talking about how you get on with your family and explain why

Free time: Give opinions on different genres of TV show and film, explain what you watched in the past tense

A week in Paris: Develop your cultural knowledge of the French capital city, use the past tense to describe a visit to Paris

Describing yourself: Revisit vocabulary for describing yourself, talk about the clothes you wear and describe them

Education: revisit how you talk about school, describe what you have studied in the past tense

Francophonie: learn all about French speakers from around the world, discuss the history of colonialism and learn about the French speaking countries including Morocco and Guadeloupe

Year 9

Where I live: Describe where you live and talk about where you would like to live in the future

Food and drink: discuss what you eat and drink for 3 meals and use the past tense to talk about what you ate yesterday

Healthy living: talk about healthy and unhealthy habits and explain how you are going to be healthier in the future

Holidays: describe a holiday in the future tense, including where you are going to go, how you are going to get there, where you are going to stay, and what you are going to do

Revision of KS3: Revisit all vocabulary and grammar taught

Les Choristes film project: Watch and understand the French film Les Choristes, discuss the characters and give opinions on what you have watched.

Year 10

Education and school: give opinions on school subjects, describe your school routine and habits, discuss school rules and school uniform

Free time: talk about your hobbies and interests, including sports, TV and films, music and other free time activities

Media, technology and celebrity culture: talk about the devices and social media that you use, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of life online, discuss celebrities and popular culture

Identity and relationships with others: describe French festivals and cultural events, talk about your family and friends

Healthy living and lifestyle: describe what you do to be healthy, discuss the body, pain and illnesses, expand on how you can be healthier in the future

Where you live: describe where you live and talk about it in 3 tenses – public transport and local amenities

Year 11

Holidays: Talk about French holiday destinations, describe your holiday in 3 tenses, including where you go, how you get there, and what you do on holiday

Environment: Discuss environmental issues in our community and across the world. Explain what you do to help the environment.

Jobs and future plans: discuss the careers that interest you and explain why, and any other future plans you have
